Watch/Record multiple channels with a single dvb tv card?
on 29-01-2007

Update: this feature is now placed in svn

The most requested feature for the tvserver is to be able to watch/record multiple tv channels at the same time with just 1 tv card

Impossible?... no, the upcoming tvserver does it!

So what does this mean ?

You can watch/record multiple tv/radio channels at the same time with just 1 (DVB/ATSC) tv card. Offcourse those channels should be located on the same transponder and are free-to-air (not encrypted)

Another great benefit from this is that we finally get perfect back-2-back recordings!

What about Encrypted channels ?
If the channels are encrypted and you have a FireDTV/FloppyDTV device then you are lucky since multi channel descrambling is supported for the FireDTV/FloppyDTV devices.
However there is a limit on the number of simultanous channels you can descramble at the same time This limit depends soley on the CAM you use. Some CAMs can only descramble 1 channel at the time while others can descramble 2-16 channels at the same time.

1. Fantastic!!!!
This feature it's one which I'm waiting for.
How would be records stored? As one TS file or separate mpg files?
Is it possible to watch more than one channel same time like PIP? Or/and have time shift one every of them? This should be possible for recording channel.

7. Perfect, this is what I was waiting on.
But a question:
I see some CAMs can support up to 16 channels, but the FireDTV/FloppyDTV are connected via Firewire. What is the limit of that Firewire connection?

8. ...
Pleas be aware, this can produce "very large size files" so if left recording a MUX, do not be surprised if your 120gb harddrive is full after allnight recording.

10. which card?
Which CAM card should I buy to get the maximum number of simultaneous channels? Not that I will use more than 4 EVER.

And what happens if you do this, doesn't it overload the FireWire of the FireDTV, or has it always been sending all the channel data at once?

And what about the harddrive? If you timeshift a channel while perhaps 5 other channels are also being received over the FireWire link, does that mean it caches 5x more data or does it only cache the current channel and throw away the rest?

Same when you are recording, does it waste space by saving a complete, muxed stream as suggested by raymond?

Also, how does this work? Is it because DVB is by default muxed, and the FireDTV simply supports sending the entire original stream over FireWire without demuxing it?

Is it just for a specific version of the FireDTV such as the DVB-C version, or is it all of them, even the satellite DVB-S based ones that have to switch satellite to get certain channels? What are the restrictions? The post is not that informative in that regard and it raises several questions.

And lastly, is the limit 10 channels at once? I read that DVB streams are 40mbit and each channel taking on average 4mbit, so the usual number of channels per stream is 10?

Lots of questions, but I'd really appreciate it if you answered them.

12. ...
This is from the Mascom (Alphacrypt CAM) site:
"Multi-channel decoding possible (for head end and for Hard disk receivers useably) – up to 8 PMTs and altogether 14 components, non-break adding and removing from services are supported." Can anyone explain to me what this means??

13. works with Terratec, not with Technotren
I had couple of Technotrend C-1500 cards, multi-channel watch/record didn't work.
Now I have Terratec Cinergy 1200 C, and multi-channel-feature works.

14. ...
with descrambling multiple encrypted channels with one DVB card and a Alphacrypt CAM, is it only possible to record channels from the same transponder or is it possible to descramble channels from different transponders?
