DHCP - Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol.
DHCP automatically configures the IP address of a PC on its local network. In a typical domestic environment the DHCP service will be provided by the router used to connect local network to the Internet.
DHCP is extremely useful for client machines, but should generally not be used for server machines, as the IP address of the server can change as a new address is allocated with the result that the client no longer knows the address of the server.
