How to batch update the value of a single field in all or selected records

Update Value

Update value offers a number of options:

• replace string
• add string
• insert string
• delete string

A string is basically a 'string' of characters within a field in your database. If you wish to update the entire field, you may use Copy Value, Delete Value, or even Update Record (selecting specific fields to update).

The following example describes how to use Replace String, but the same process is used for any of the Update Value operations.

Example 

If you grabbed data from different sites, using different grabbers, you might end up with categories with different names for the same category or genre. You can clean up your categories or even change certain category values  to match others e.g. change "Children" to  "Family").

You can use the 'Update Value - Replace String' operation to perform such updates.

Steps

1. On Update Movies Tab, Select "Update Value - Replace String" as Operation (1).
2. Select the field you want to Update - "Category" in this example (2)
3. Select the value you want to replace (3) e.g. 'Children'
4. Select the Value you want  to use (4)  e.g. 'Family'
5. Select "Update all records" (5) to update the complete catalog. (You may also restrict it to partial updates by defining conditions under Parameters).
6. Test and Apply the changes.

Note:  You can update such values from within MyFilms  for single movies - but AMC  Updater allows you to perform batch updates for the whole catalog or selected records

Similar use cases

If you want to add or remove strings, you can use the "Update Value - Add / Insert / Remove String" operations in a similar way.
 By combining these operations with "conditions" in the parameter section, you could  for example remove "children" only in the records where "family" is already contained in the category field.

The same approach can be done if you want to correct other "string like" content in any field of your database.
