Overview

How to control who can access your movies, such as restrict your kids from seeing adult films.

Methodology

In MyFilms, you do not need to select each film you wish to protect. You can select criteria to determine the movies you wish protected, and it will automatically apply to any movies you add.

There are two ways you can protect films:

  1. Create separate configs and filter the movies that display for each config
  2. Create separate databases - easier if you already have separate AMC XML databases or export your films from an external catalog in separate XML files.

In both cases, you simply select a password for the config or database.

Create Separate Configs

Tip If you customize many settings in your Config, you can simply copy the config to create a new one with the same settings. Then simply edit the settings and filter for the new config and you're good to go!

This is probably the most common way to protect some movies. You can use the same movies folder and settings if you wish and view all the movies in a single database in your movie catalog app.

  1. Create a config using the Setup Wizard (see Quick Setup > Existing Catalogs if you already have a catalog and just wish to filter it, or New Catalogs if you are creating a new database.)
  2. After the Wizard creates your config, Filter the films that will display for that config.:
    1. In MyFilms Setup > General Tab > Custom Config Filters. The filter you create depends on your data or file structure. For example:
      1. If you have Certification/Ratings for all your films, you could filter one config by Certification 'PG' etc. and another by 'R' and 'PG-13' and 'UnRated'
      2. If you have stored your films in separate folder such as an ''Adult' folder, you can also use a filter based on the 'Source' field, e.g. 'Source contains \Adult' vs. 'Source not contains \Adult'
  3. Once you have created your configs, simply add a password to the config you wish to protect on the General Tab in MyFilms Setup.

To create more advanced filters for your config using the Filters Editor, see Filters Setup.

Create Separate Databases

If you have organized the films you wish to protect in separate folders (e.g. if you store 'Adult' films in one folder and 'Family' films in another), or you already have separate databases for your protected vs. unprotected films, you can create one database for the protected films and another for the unprotected films.

  1. Create a config using the Setup Wizard
  2. If you have separate databases already (or export your protected movies to separate XML files) Simply select the XML database or exported file.
  3. If you are creating new databases, see Quick Setup > New Catalogs. When the Setup Wizard asks you to choose the folder for your movies, select the folder with your protected films for one database and the folder containing your unprotected films for the other database.
  4. Once you have created your configs/databases, simply add a password to the config you wish to protect on the General Tab in MyFilms Setup.

Note:  When you select the movies folder for your catalog/database the Wizard sets the Movies Scan path on the Import Tab and syncs it to the Import Movies tab in AMCUpdater for importing.

The advantage of using two databases is that you do not need to define a filter. However, the disadvantage is that you must import your films separately for each database. However since import can be scheduled and thus run automatically, it's not a huge disadvantage, but it means you need to open separate databases in your movie catalog app (e.g. AMC), and export the protected/unprotected films separately from your external catalog if you don't use AMC.

If you already have separate AMC databases, or can easily export adult vs family films from your movie catalog app, this method is very easy. However, creating a filter based on your movie folders can also be easy, so the choice is yours!

Access your Configs/DBs in My Films

When you have more than one database or config, you have several ways to access them in MyFilms.  See Multiple DBs or Configs..

What's Next

Now you never need to worry about PIN protection again. Any films you add will automatically be protected no matter which method you choose.
