1. Network load
Great idea, I just have one small point. Would 1 'beat' every 5 seconds lead to many packets been sent and thus slow down the streaming?

1. Probably not
I am not sure on how this is implemented but I think a small check to see if its still running vs streaming video would be minimal...

2. Short answer, not a problem
Some additional load, yes. However, when compared to streaming video and audio, you won't even notice the difference.
