MediaPortal gets minimized to tray when playback of an avi is started
Written by infinityloop, on 12-08-2008

There is a bug in the current divx codec Version 6.8.x which causes that MediaPortal and other applications like gb-pvr minimize to the tray, as soon as you start to play an avi, which uses the divx codec.

This issue only occurs if you comply the following criterias:
  1. OS is VISTA (32bit or 64bit)
  2. MediaPortal runs maximized/fullscreen
  3. MediaPortal uses VMR9 as videorenderer
  4. playback of the videofile uses divx-codec
A bugreport has been submitted at the divxlabs.

Solution:
The easiest solution is to enable the "EVR"  instead of the "VMR9".
To do that go to "MediaPortal Configuration", switch to "expert mode" and then select "DirectShow Filter Control" where you will find the "Video Renderer Settings".

If you do not want to use the Vista's EVR, then you can also uninstall the divx codec and use an other codec like xvid instead.
Note:
Issues like this one, which are caused by 3rd party software, can be found in our Knowledge Base

1. XP, too
This is happening in XP as well, and has started since I upgraded to 1.0 RC2.

2. Me too, also using XP SP2.
RC2 on XP SP2 also does this, when I click on the tray icon MediaPortal opens back up but I then have to replay the AVI again for it to start.

3. Does it on XP too (RC2)
Confirmed that is does this on XP too, minimises to tray, if you maximise it back up again and select the video again it works fine, but it's always the second time.

I performed the fix as described in the article, and it now doesn't minimise to tray.. however it does lose focus, so you have to (i did anyway) use the mouse and click the video while running, then you're able to stop/pause etc

slightly less anoying now ;)

5. Anyone find a solution in XP MP RC2?
Anyone figure this out in XP? I think it must be a bug in MP RC2 in XP as I never saw it before installing this. I upped the merit of xvid over divx, but this resulted in terrible quality for some avi files. I also tried enabling EVR as described, installing .NET3 and SP3 in turn, but I only get a black screen with sound (any ideas on tweaking that?)

I appreciate any thoughts from anyone else who's going through this. The wife is getting exasperated by this problem.

6. Mr.
Definitely happens in XP SP3. What is weird is that it doesnt always happen the first time - seems to be a race condition of some kind. And I have had it happen on the second try as well.

Hoping that divx releases an updated codec, it drives me nuts :-) All the more reason to only play 264 videos....
