Using test builds
About test builds
Test builds of MediaPortal are created periodically in order to test the latest bug fixes. These are NOT updates which are intended for the general user. They will not have been thoroughly tested, and may contain new bugs. Do not expect a test build to be stable.
A test builds is also known as SVN build/SVN snapshot (named after our source code control system Subversion).
Test builds will generally be released on a weekly basis, although this may not happen during critical stages of development (e.g. close to a new release version). Please do not draw any conclusions from the lack of a test build!
Installing a test build
Just like with a normal MediaPortal install, make sure your system is up to date following the instructions on the requirements page.
For most stable results, start with a clean system, for example by restoring a harddisk backup that was made before installing MediaPortal.
Currently, test builds are distributed as RAR archives.
Step 1: Install MediaPortal
Download the latest version of MediaPortal.
Install MediaPortal and do not configure it yet.
If you have already installed MediaPortal and configured, you should probably be okay, but please bear in mind that changes in a SVN release can cause problems with some of your settings. If you encounter a problem after applying a SVN version, please uninstall MediaPortal and verify with a fresh resinstall if the problems still exit.
Step 2: Download the SVN snapshot
Download and extract the latest SVN-Snapshot.
The download link can be found in the first post in the forum thread. Please read other posts in the thread before installing or reporting problems.
Step 3: Install the SVN Snapshot
To update MediaPortal run MediaPortal_weekly-snapshot.exe.
If installed you can update the TV-Server by running TV-Server_weekly-snapshot.exe
More information about the installation process to follow!
Step 4: Configure MediaPortal
Note: You should reconfigure MediaPortal as some of the configuration files may have been updated.
Step 5: Reporting problems
If you find any problems playing around with MediaPortal, proceed with reporting problems.
Restoring previous MediaPortal installation
This method can be used when a backup folder has been created while updating MediaPortal (Case 3).
Uninstall MediaPortal.
Delete the remaining MediaPortal, or rename it to MediaPortalTest.
Start the MediaPortal installer. (Required to get the correct registry settings back, that may have changed by installing the SVN snapshot.)
Install MediaPortal to the same location where it was installed before.
After the installation, delete the MediaPortal folder that was just created, or rename it to MediaPortalClean.
Rename your MediaPortalBackup folder to MediaPortal
Check your settings by running MediaPortal configuration
