Announcement: MediaPortal II
Written by infinityloop, on 16-11-2007

About a year ago some of the team members came together to discuss the future of MediaPortal. We evaluated the current situation and realized that we where running into problems. Over the last few years MediaPortal has grown and grown and we've reached a point where it is getting harder and harder to get MediaPortal stable and add new features to MediaPortal. This means release schedules kept moving and developers where spending more time fixing bugs then actually adding new features or enhancing existing features.

Another trend we see is that the HTPC community has been changing.  When we started developing MP a few years ago, we had this idea of a stand-alone PC in your living room holding all your media and playing it back on your TV. But today we're moving to a networked enviroment where you want to watch your media anywhere. In the living room, kitchen, bedroom, on your xbox360 but also remotely for example on your ipod video, zune or via the internet.

It became clear that MediaPortal as it is today is not ready for the future and that something had to be done. So some members of the MediaPortal Team started thinking about a new generation of MediaPortal, called MediaPortal II.

At the time I'm writing this MediaPortal II is still in a very early stage and not as feature rich as Mediaportal I.

We will soon release an alpha release of Mediaportal II (codename Infinity) to the public to play with and offcourse to receive feedback and suggestions.

With the release of Infinity (the alpha version of MediaPortal II) we will also present a roadmap for MediaPortal II. This roadmap which will show what features will be added in the upcoming versions and whats the planned release date for each version.

What is MediaPortal II?

screenshot.jpg

With MediaPortal II we have decided to start from scratch to get a better design and architecture.

Architecture

The biggest problem we have with MediaPortal I is that the architecture is not flexible enough. Because of this many features get hardcoded and behaviour is hard to change. Developing plugins for MP-1 required great knowledge of the entire MP code.

Our main goals for MediaPortal II are: stable & flexible and yet easy to understand.
This means that the for endusers, skinners and plugin developers it should be possible to change anything they want while keeping things simple for beginners. We want MP-II to be very easy to use and configure, even for people who never seen it before.
some examples of what MediaPortal II should be able to do
  • menu customizations: end users, plugin developers and skinners can create, change and modify menus
  • skin customizations: a skin can be easily customized by using themes
  • metadata customizations: an end user can easily change whats shown onscreen
  • auto updating: an end user should be able to select, download, install new plugins from within MediaPortal II using a nice GUI
Another concept we introduced in MP-II is that its build around (internal) services.
The core implements all features as services. These services can be used by plugin developers and they even can enhance  or replace those services with more advanced versions. They can also add there own services which can then be used by other plugins.
We also have a message broker in MP-II. A plugin can subscribe to messages send by the core to do some action but it can also create and send its own messages to others

Expandability
With MediaPortal II we are going a new way. The main application will only provide basic functionality. But because of the new design, community plugin authors will have much more freedom and power for their cool features.

MediaPortal II also contains an inbuild version of the MPI (MediaPortal Installer) which will allow the user to browse the online repository, download, install and configure available plugins and skins without leaving MediaPortal II.

This means that because MediaPortal II will be and stay a slim application, it will be much more stable then MediaPortal I is. Community Plugins will be playing an much more important part in the MediaPortal II.
This also means that because we will have less bug hunting to do for the main application, we will have more time on our hands for support.
Configuration:
MediaPortal II will allow the user to do as much configuration as possible inside the main application. For advanced settings like creating new views and changing the menu, you will have an external configuration tool available. The great thing about this external tool is that it will be completely localized.
Skinengine:
In the very early stages we have been evaluating WPF/XAML for the skinengine. WPF/XAML is a great technology allowing for fanastic graphics gui's. However when playing with it we discovered that WPF/XAML is missing some key features needed for building a media center. So we developed our own new DirectX based skinengine, which uses the same architecture as XAML/WPF and is easy to understand for skinners.
Since one of the design goals of MP-II is flexibility we have the option to replace the skinengine with a WPF/XAML engine when WPF/XAML has matured and can be used for building media center type of applications.

LIST OF SKINENGINE FEATURES
  • complete separation between GUI and code
  • databinding
  • commands
  • styles and templates
  • 2D and 3D
  • animations
  • flexible and easily expandable
  • supports vertex and pixel shaders
  • supports use of scripts
  • supports themes

Current Feature List:

  • UPnP:
    • MP-II contains an internal UPnP server
    • MP-II can control & render media from any other UPnP server
  • Picture in Picture (PIP)
  • Intelligent Zoom
  • My Pictures
  • My Movies (+DVD)
  • My Music
  • Settings
  • Extensions installer for skins, plugins ect. (known as MPI)
  • Core:
    • new skinengine (see feature list above)
    • Customizable menus
    • customizable views
    • general media manager
    • general database manager
    • Message broker

As you can see there is no Tv or Radio yet. Infinity will be an alpha release which is not feature complete. Of course those missing features will be added in the next version (codename Haïti).

We have created a new forum thread and are looking forward to your comments and thoughts.

Note: The announcement of MediaPortal 2 does not mean that the current Version is now dead and abandoned. We will post news about the future of "the old lady" and the TV-Server very soon.

7. Best news to date
I have been using 2.3RC2 on my laptop and I love it. But this announcement has got me doing the jig. It was mentioned that you will have support for streaming internet video, if I am not mistaken. Will you have that option under the My TV menu and will there be a search option? Man I hope so... You guys set the standard as far as Media Centers go. Thanks for your hardwork. It just shows that we are getting rip off by corporations like Microsoft who charge us an arm and a leg for limited software like Media Center.

9. Interesting
Sounds alot like the Meedio/MeediOS approach, which ,IMO, is a good one. And makes it more futureproof. Hopefully, MPII development will proceed faster than MeediOS has.

12. Media portal 2 must have HD support
Nice... But MAKE SURE YOU ADD FULL SUPPORT FOR HD (HD DVD/BLURAY/ EVERTHING HD)..
Without that Mediaportal 2 is just media portal 1 with new look.
You guys are great..

16. You have my support
Great news.

That you are spending too much time fixing bugs it's very clear. The idea of starting from zero is a good idea.

Please take all the time you need to plan the route of the process.

You are doing a very good work and I'm sure we all are thankfully about it.

Sorry for the spanglish.

17. Usability
This announcement sounds very good to me. While trying to develop a plugin I encountered several internals which really look bogus. Therefore cleaning up the architecture is very good idea in order to support plugin developers und shorten development time.

There is an issue not mentioned yet which I think is very important anyway: Usability. Many UI functions (such as TV recordings) are very hard to use and handle.

I suggest to more focus on the user's usecases rather than on features.

25. Wonderful!
Impressive! I can understand why development on MP1 has felt a bit lagging and slow over the last 6 months now, seeing as you probably were a lot more interested in working on the new generation. It's an incredibly strong initiative, and great to know that the core developers are committed enough to dare to take this rather huge step forward. I'm looking forward to testing out the alpha!
Cheers!

26. TV engine
I guess the new TV-engine will be uPnP itself? With the new uPnP support you would get a perfect solution with separation of concern while supporting standard media viewers also for TV...

27. fantastic!
This is perfect, you guys know exactly the target you're shooting for. Basic, basic, basic. Let the advanced/narrow features lay in the hands of the plugin devs. Nice, stable base would be awesome.

I for one, will focus some forum efforts towards keeping people away from asking for features to be included in the core. Anything I can do to help!

28. Cross-platform?
I LOVE you!!!
Will you be considering a cross-platform approach?
As you point out, uses for mediaportal are so diverse and it would be great to have support for other platforms ie linux, mac and windows mobile/symbian.
If it's as modular as you say, presumably people will be free to code apps for other platforms.
Please, TELL ME MORE ;p

29. database support
This may be my not knowing enough but what about database support? IMDB is fine for movie's but I find it sucks for Anime so is there going to be any easier Database support for adding sources at the user level like anibd.net and for music services like animelyrics.com?

Also, personally would love it if you seperated DVD from My Movies and had a My DVD section seperate.

All this new stuff sounds great and I love it and look forward to seeing MediaPortal II.
You've done a fantastic job, keep it up

32. Excited... tho a bit bummed
I would have prefered a 1.0 release before you guys started development on II, but I can see why you wouldn't wont to "waste" resources on a platform your feel have been overtaken by the development in technology and user patterns.

Looking forward to MP II, sounds like a solid foundation for a complete HTPC set-up :)

33. Excellent
This is fabulous news indeed!
Try and keep the client as simple as possible, so that it can run on relatively low-spec machines, and have as much processing done on the server backend as you like and keep the clients small and clean :-)
Very good move, imho.
For this, I will be a very willing tester! (And I suspect, a genereous donater!)

34. Go 4 it!
Looking forward to give it a try... I must say that 0.2.3.0 works great for me. And for my own needs as MediaCenter it is fully featured. A better TV engine is the only thing I can ask for... But not any other functionality. If the only way to achieve it, is redo the whole architecture then go for it...

Keep up the splendid job!!!

35. awesome
thank you all, you put an incredible amount of work in for little/no reward, and it really is appreciated. A brave decision, but the correct one to move forward with, I personally can't wait. And for whoever mentioned it, there's really no need for any cross platfrom support in the current climate of virtual environments...

36. MP2. Full HD support or nothing...
If I can't play bluray/hd dvd/bittorrent hd stuff with ease, then Media Portal will be still lacking.

Please, please (on my knees begin), High DEF support with hardware decoding. I don't care if you guys have to "borrow" from other software to get it done.
This will make me happy before I die (

38. MP rules
I started using MP already long time ago. And this news make me happy. But having a look at some comments I think peoples do not understand some things. A wish to have MP also running on Symbian (for what reason ever) sounds nonrealistic to me.
Anyway I am sure it's on the right way.

40. Holy Flying Batman...
I'm sad I'm not in a position to test the MPII alpha release :(

But maybe this will get me motivated to work on some plugins...

I love the scalability route because it allows for changes to the program in specific sections without crazy changes to the core code...

41. Development
I think this is a very important step forward. Although I'm not a programmer myself I saw fixed bugs getting re-introduced in later versions ... A complete modular setup should be able to handle this sort of errors en provide a rocksolid fundament.

I wll be more then happy to test the new version!

43. Great!
Hi!

Like all the others here I am also amazed about the energy and creativity that you developers have. I like MP I alot and it works much better than the other MediaCenters I have tested. However, it really is not 100% stable. I can easily deal with this, as I know it is an open project which is like a living organism :)
However, A new slim lightweight MP II would be much better, I think. It is not only that plugin developers can quickly design various features for the new version but the trick is: the user can decide NOT to install things he does not need! This is great.

44. Mobile devices
With the new version I hope that it will also be possible to integrate mobile devices (e.g. PocketPCs) into the Media Network. Maybe someone feels able to develop a UPNP player for the PocketPC which could serve as a client for MP. I know this already works by means of VLC as a streaming engine, however, a real MP client on the PPC would be a different thing. You could use the PPC as THE ultimate remote control and if you are hooked up to a fast WiFi Network anywhere in the world, you could take MP (and all your Media!) with you!

45. Ideas to improve a great peice of code.
While we are doing feature requests, better support for multpile cards on TV server (I love TV server BTW) and viewing multiple streams, for PIP etc would be great. Even if a open core allowed for a pluging to do it.

47. MP-II Feature suggestions
Great news !
The new possibilities sounds great. Two Features you must include as standard in the new version (these are apparently missing i MP-I):

1. File explorer/launcher in the menu's

It should be possible to browse files and folders on the harddrive and launch files using only the remote control in the nice MP GUI ('My programs'-plugin does not quite do it). Icons from Ink-files could be automatically shown.

2. Playing DVD's from folders.

A great feature would be if MP could automatically find DVD-folders (like it does with video/audio-files) and display them as DVD-films.

50. WOW!
Guys, WOW!

Two apps have really rocked my home:

1. XBMC
2. Media Portal

I started with XBMC years ago when I first saw it at a friend. I ran to the shop to grab an xbox, get it modded as soon as possible and have been using the xbox until I wanted to go HD.

This summer I decided to bite the bullet and put together an silent quad core machine which was to run MP @ 1080P. I had a little trouble with MP running on Vista, in combination with a Floppy DTV Cable card, but now have MP running pretty stable on XP PRO with two Floppy DTV cards.

And now I have MP II to look forward to.

THANK YOU!

52. source code?
Great news! Love that you finally decided to go the UPnP route :D ...UPnP has really taken the main role as the de facto communication protocol standard within home entertainment networked devices and softwares :)

Just one question; is the source code for MediaPortal II already in the public SVN or will you only put it in there once the alpha is released?

55. Better Music DB?
push another "hurray" onto the stack for MPII.
#1thing that frustrates me in MP is having to do a full rebuild on my music DB to get new material to integrate correctly. Watch folders don't seem to cut it. I know you guys could do much better than a flatfile for repository. Can't complain too much since I'm not helping at all (maybe I could help?) but a nice relational DB which is easily updatable and perhaps can cross reference title, artist, genre, etc would be a welcome addition. If you put MPII together in such a way that the repository could be a plugin then I'd probably build one :)

56. Chances of survival
This is where most of these projects get stuck, and i hope the opposite for this great project. Obviously developers are aware of Microsoft, Apple and Sony plans to network our homes with their devices. It's going back to times where hardware made the decisions, not Software, which makes the survival of MediaPortal II very hard and late. Late because i'm not sure how MediaPortal will follow up all these devices.
I hope well for MediaPortal, any ideas?

58. Cross platform
It's been said before but you may not have time to read all the comments so it deserves to be said more than once.

If you're going to remake it completely why not make it CROSS PLATFORM? Linux is slowly but persistently taken over the windows market. I'm sure it will explode any year. My prophesy is within 10 years Linux will be dominant on the home pc market.

59. No linux
I would not worry about cross platform as it seems hard enough to get 1 platform working.
As "Andreas" says it might be 10 years before you really have to worry about a linux version.

61. Great News!
This is great news, though I would urge you to work hard on making the transition of existing plug-ins as smooth and as easy as possible to ensure maximum functionality "out of the box".

I would also like to see a cross platform version though I see the words DirecX and understand that that ties you to Microsoft. Maybe try and code the core to be cross platform so that some one can code a Linux and MacOS Gui as a module later on? I think that is what you are implying may be possible?

This is superb work and has transformed how I live my life at home!

Thanks

62. Why not WPF?
I'm curious: What were the features missing from WPF that made you decide to roll your own XAML UI engine?

64. silverlight
I don't know much about Silverlight, but from the little I've read, it sounds like you can compile your .NET applications into this framework -- which is a cross platform framework. I'd love to see MPII on linux.

65. Just please keep it as good as it is!
MediaPortal is the best HTPC software ever created. I just hope rewriting it from scratch won't change this fact...

67. I can't wait!
After using Mediaportal for half a year now, I've grown real fond of it. It is the heart of our livingroom's music, video and television.

A BIG thanks for MediaPortal in general and good luck in making the new MediaPortal. I love it!

68. Configuration
Nice application.

Just one question: Where does it store the configuration/log files?
On MP 023 it's within the install (program files) directory. This is not a place for these files, but only for the application files. Configuration/log files and such should be in de Users folder.

70. "Preview" version is being kind
Let's see - 100% CPU usage, no way to browse network shares, lock-ups like crazy. Behaves just as poorly on XP as Vista. What a shame. Nice looking front end. Worthless to use. And please get a security code generator that actually generates letters the human eye can read without needing 3 or 4 tries.
