Encrypted TV-Channels
on 26-05-2006

This week the encryption of the german pay-tv provider 'Premiere' on DVB-S and DVB-C has been hacked. Nevertheless with MediaPortal it is still not possible to view any encrypted tv-channel without a valid subscription card (smartcard) for good reasons.

Everyone who is asking in the forum how it is possible to do so or is linking to files or tutorials that make it possible to do so will be rewarded with a post ban.

Certainly it is possible to watch and record encrypted channels with MediaPortal in the legal way. With a TV-Card + supported CI, a Conditional Access Module (CAM) and a valid subscription card (smardcard) of your pay-tv provider.

MediaPortal does not support any illegal way to record or view encrypted tv-channels!

Considering that not everybody lives in Germany, wouldn't this have better been put to use as a sticky post on the forum?

I think it is fine that they announce it as an offical statement...

And as Joshua says, it is good to tell that they don't support illegal tv-channels...

NO softcam support! because it can be used to watch pay-tv in a illegal way.

btw. the use of a softcam with smartcardreader is illegal in many countries and prohibited by all pay-tv providers.

I still think you are a bit harsh.

"NO softcam support! because it can be used to watch pay-tv in a illegal way."

So you should remove video and MP3 play since it can be used to play stolen material or even child porn.

And we should all stop using knives because they can be used to kill people.

Be more open minded: SoftCam is NOT illegal by itself. What it can be used for (and is NOT easy to do it after all), is not a problem of MP devs. Not even remotely.

I guess the solution then would be to have a version for those countries and a version for the rest. Many companies do it for various legalities (including MS). If someone from the country that this is illegal uses the wrong version, it definately is not MP problem.

For example in my country we have no such law.

Anyway, be calm, we write opinions here, right?

"NO softcam support! because it can be used to watch pay-tv in a illegal way." this is true but for me is wrong, company have reason if they ask money in order to see their channels, it begins to become a non-justice if they say to you also with what you can see them.
anyway.....
MP is free and anyone can do anything

Interesting. The Nebula DVB-T card I use (which works with MediaPortal) suggests the use of a soft-CAM to support PPV services in UK with their PCI card. (There are instructions on their web site).

I personally cannot see how it is illegal to support the use of such plug-ins in the Media Portal architecture.

If it is illegal to install or use such a soft CAM in a given country/state then such devices get left out of the core build and installation. They can be installed where they are allowed.

Pirating of TV can be done without soft CAMs so they are not in themselves going to cause piracy. (Premier for what its worth has been hacked for the last 6 months, and many times before that).

An architecture that can support soft-CAMs is IMHO a good thing not a bad as it allows flexibility and any API might be used for other enhancements in the future.

I hope MediaPortal is doing this from a (IMHO misguided) attempt to hold the moral high ground - but I suspect they might under some pressure from somewhere.

Its a shame - esp as an open source project could easily spawn an unofficial soft-cam fork with a less mature point of view and split effort and support.

The "rules" of the Providers are without legal value!
You can use your original smartcard in any way in any receiver (not only in "certificated receivers"). This ist not illegal, you have an abo and use the original smartcard.

Speaking of providers legal values I know that at least Sky in the UK have written in there TOS that you MUST only use the viewing card in authorised Sky hardware otherwise you are in breach of contract!! so anybody watching it on a CAM in there PC is doing the naughty. But hey who cares about that rule my CAMs working great to decrypt Sky!!!

So if I have "a TV-Card + supported CI, a Conditional Access Module (CAM) and a valid subscription card" everything is OK. But if I want to record a show and watch a live stream at the same time I would have to buy yet another dvb-card with CI/CAM? Or will it be possible to use one supported CI/CAM with multiple dvb-tuners?

There are lots of pay-tv-provider-supported boxes with dual tuners that use the same smartcard..
