MediaPortal / TV-Server 1.0 RC1 released!
Written by Team MediaPortal, on 17-04-2008

With the first Release Candidate of MediaPortal and TV-Server 1.0 we made a big step forward to the next stable release version.

We know that this is very exciting but please read the entire news before you start installing because it contains important information you need to know.

*The first release had a small problem regarding the TV-Server-Installation which could be fixed quickly so we've decided to release a fixed version (MediaPortal_Setup_1.0_RC1_Refesh.exe).*

DeployTool
During the last months we have been working on a tool which simplifies the installation of MediaPortal or a complete TV-Server enviroment.
You just have to answer a few questions and it will take care of downloading and installing the required components.
Not only do we have a "one click installation option" we also have an "advanced mode" which will allow you to install all possible MediaPortal and/or TV-Server configurations easily and provides you with full control about all installation parameters.
The DeployTool also supports "Localization" which means that it can be translated into many different languages.
Although a few languages are already supported we could need your help to offer even more translations for the final 1.0 release. If you want to contribute please have a look at the DeployTool forums where more information about the translation process will be published.

Note:
The DeployTool requires an active internet connection (at least on the first run). We have added an option do only download all required components so you are still able to install MediaPortal in an offline mode on HTPC's without an internet connection.

Please be aware that (because of Windows security restrictions) it is not possible to run a .NET based application like the DeployTool from a network share. You have to download it to your local HDD and start it from there.

TV-Server
The MediaPortal TV-Server is now part of the main package. At first we would like to get rid of a common misunderstanding.
Although it is called "TV-Server" the "Client / Server architecture" is not the main benefit.
Our wiki has a very detailed comparison of the old, MediaPortal inbuilt, TV module and the TV-Server.
The main difference is that the TV module which is still inbuilt in MediaPortal uses Microsoft's StreamBuffer engine and therefore creates those dvr-ms files when you record something. The TV-Server has been developped by us from scratch to overcome many issues and limitations we had earlier.

MediaPortal and TV-Server installation (important!)
To ensure that your installation of MediaPortal and TV-Server will not get compromised by old files or broken databases this release candidate requires a clean installation.

The DeployTool is able to uninstall old versions of MediaPortal and TV-Server but during our tests we have noticed that the old TV-Server installers cause some issues during the uninstallation, which will require an reboot to complete the uninstall process.
This is why we would like to advice you to manually uninstall any old version of TV-Server before you start the DeployTool.
This is only a issue with the old installers it does not occur with the new one we created for 1.0 RC1.

The deinstallation of an old MediaPortal version will cause that community skins and plugins get deleted as well.
Please make sure that you are using recent versions of skins and plugins which have been updated for 1.0 RC1.

During the first start of TV-Server the database will get deleted. If you want to keep your current channel list and recording schedules you have to select the "EXPORT" button in the "TV channels" section and save the file to a safe place outside of MP's directory.

Bug reporting and test builds
This RC1 release will of course still contain some bugs. The purpose of this release is to find and fix them.
This will be much easier now because everyone of us has a common base for testing.
In addition we will change our untested SVN-builds from a daily to a weekly schedule. This will prevent false bug reports about issues which have already been fixed and therefore save some work for you and us. Wink
The first SVN-build (which is based on the 1.0 RC1 release) will be available on Friday, 25th April.
There will be only one build then which contains latest SVN versions of TV-Server and MediaPortal. You will find these threads in a new forum section .

If you use the TV-Server for TV please report any TV related bugs in the TV-Server Bugreport Forum .
Before your start an report make sure that you read the TV-Server Bugreport Rules.

Any other issue must be reported in the MediaPortal Bugreport Forum .
Before your start an report, make sure that you read the MediaPortal Bugreport Rules.

If you encounter problems with the DeployTool please report them in the DeployTool forums.

We hope that you enjoy this brand new release. Smile

18. Bug with Foobar not installed ?
Hello,
I am on french mp website. I tested the new RC1 quickly but I thing I seen a bug. When I chose foobar on the mp configuration, I had a message that said me that I hadn't Foobar on my PC (It's right because I haven't Foobar yet), but after the configuration failed and I was exited of the configuration program. I seen just this bug (not a problem, I must not select Foobar configuration if I hadn't this program).
It's just to move up this very little bug, and perhaps it's just on my pc... and my poor OS :( ;), but I prefer to say that

Good Job on RC1 Very good Job Guy ;)

Well Done

19. Great guy's !!
Great work guy's !
I just bought a new media center pc and was hoping I could start with this release on the system.
Keep up the good work, it is much appreciated by the community.

btw, I get the feeling the way RC's are intended is not really used for media portal, when I read the description it's more like a BETA release package.
A release candidate I finished and the developers see it as a candidate for full release with maybe minimal changes to it.

wikipedia :

The term release candidate refers to a version with potential to be a final product, ready to release unless fatal bugs emerge

21. Lost Recorded TV
sure you can export the channel list and recording schedules, they'd be a pain to recreate but the recorded TV, well you can't export that and cant recreate it later, don't warn people of that will you.

May I suggest that in future the installer makes a backup of the channels and recordings and then re-imports them once instal is over?

28. Do we realy need both DB servers?
There should be an option to only download one of the two database server options in doing the download-only setup.

I know it may seen like a minor thing, but to have to download MSSQL server just to download the other components is a pain.

29. Missing Radio
Great work! I've been testing it since Friday and it works great. Plugin and skin tool is amazing. The only thing I would suggest, is to also include plugin screenshots.

I'm missing Radio section in MP Configuration. Where did it go?

Thanks again!

30. Possible memory leaks
First off great project i have been using your mediacenter for about 3 years now i think, Plus nice speed improvements in MP2.0. The problem is since trying RC1 to try out TV-server3.0 on my flat set up i have found the main client in single seat mode to use about 100mb more than MP2.3 plus it slowly rises about 1mb per min aka memory leak. I have tried it with just the old tv plugin too and it is still the same. As above is the need to download both sql clients really necessary? Anyway just giving a heads up and hopefully the bugs will just work themselves out before the full release.
Thanks

33. Wow! This is absolutely fantastic!
THANK YOU!

I have this release running nicely on two Vista Ultimate SP1 machines (one as TV server, the other as client).

My MP HTPC system runs rings round any other Media device I have ever seen (except XBMC, but that project can't do HD or TV due to hardware limitations).

You make closed source brands like Siemens (I once tried their pathetic M750C IR dual DVB-C tuner...) and Samsung (Tried their HD DVBC tuner...) look like a bunch of incompetent amatures. It takes them monts to fix bugs, it takes you guys days. They never add functionality, you guys just keep it coming!

Fantastic!

34. How compatible is this with 0.2.3?
So my MP 0.2.3 is running perfectly and I don't want to mess it up... but I'd like to check this out.

Can I easily install this in a separate directly and run either one? Hearing from anyone that's doing this would be appreciated!

35. Brilliant!
Great.. installation went like a charm and seems very stable - haven't had a single crash for a few days :)
But one little thing's driving me crazy is when watching live TV, i can't go into standby/hibernate without pressing the stop button on my remote first?
Once again, thanks for a brilliant piece of software!

38. How to upgrade from 0.2.3?
Hi Guys, awesome release!!!!
Please let me know if there is any documentation on retaining my current music, movies etc databasis changing from 0.2.3 to MP1? I have been using the built in TV service. When installing the new version, all my movies, music & TV databasis are gone. Please help as I would like to upgrade a.s.a.p. to this exiting version. (I reverted back to the previous backup.

41. Blows MCE/Vista out of the water
I have used just about every piece software out there, all presented problems and limited functionality - either too awkward to use, or bits that didnt work properly or were too slow.

Media Portal / Server RC1, is by far the best!
Huge improvement since MP V0.2.3.0.

This is what a Media Centre should be, simple, easy to use using a MCE remote, fast and with plenty of addons/plugins.

This beast even boots up my Media Centre to record a scheduled recording, then shuts down afterwards!

Huge thanks to the developers on this - Superb piece of software!!!

44. SVN builds for media portal 1.0 RC1
When SVN builds for media portal 1.0 RC1 are going to be published?

I've seen a couple of good fixes for RC2.
Are they going to be released before RC2?

45. RC1 changes codec merits?
I hade to reinstall DirectVobSub codec (I use it for divx/xvid) to be able to playback any non-mpg content. Also, in 0.2.3.0 I had configured audio to digital out (s/pdif) and MP did automatically output AC3/DTS to my reciever. In 1.0 I have my codecs setup EXACTLY the same, but I only get regular mpeg sound for everything now.

Great work though guys, I'm just curious.

47. Running from a network share
I noticed in the article that it says you can't run the deploy tool from a network share. Yes you can...with a small modification to the Code Access Security (CAS) for .NET. You have to modify the LocalIntranet policy I believe.

49. TV server issues
testing has gone well, save the tv server setup:

let's see, no obvious warning popups about the TV server password, which left many wondering wth it was.

tv server configuration tells me I have bugs with a brand new version of some .dll file, yet still launches when i hit ok, to no avail, I can tune, I can see the card(fusion 5 rt gold), but the client will not connect, says failed to create graph and something else, so far nothing but TV server failure where once I had it going with the old manual install. The rest seems to be working nice, including the newest MPTVseries plugin.

50. Great!
Wow! This is ultimately the most stable media portal version I have ever used.

Thank you for your effor on this release, this is a perfect solution to DVB-subtitles and all issues some users had before.

I think this release is really worth a donation.
