MediaPortal 1.0 and TV-Server 1.0
Written by infinityloop, on 22-11-2007

The release of MediaPortal 0.2.3.0 and the announcement of MediaPortal 2 do not implicit that the "good old MediaPortal I" is abandoned. Our next goal is to create a stable MediaPortal - TV-Server solution, which means to work towards a MediaPortal 1.0 and TV-Server 1.0. For those who fear the chance: MediaPortal 1.0 will still contain the inbuild TV-Engine.

So the main focus for the 1.0 releases is on stability and useability. This means that you will not see many (if any) new features in these releases.

Quite some time ago we started to write our own filter (TsReader.ax) to get rid of problems and limitations we encountered with the currently used filter (TSFileSource.ax).

Because of the great work from all developers involved in the creation of this filter and because of the great help of the comunity , this filter will become default in MediaPortal 1.0.

Besides the problems which are solved by the new filter, you will also get improved and new functionalities.

  • nearly instant skipping inside a recorded *.ts file and in LiveTV
  • very fast channel changes
  • support for dvb-subtitles
  • support for the coreavc h.264 codec

Another point on our todo-list is the installation. We know that the first time setup of an TV-Server enviroment is a lot of work. And this is where our new DeployTool comes in.

Yes you read right. We have been working on a tool which will make the installation of all required components (TV-Server, MediaPortal and SQL-Server) as easy as possible.

It offers the user a OneClick (Singleseat) installation option and an Advanced Mode to create client/server installations.

It will be available for testing as soon as we release MediaPortal 1.0 RC1 and TV-Server 1.0 RC1.

We have a very long road to go to accomplish these goals. You can help us by posting detailed bug reports in the forums.

1. Thanks!!
You guys (any girls?) are awesome. Mediaportal is already very stable. WAF-factor is really high and since 0.2.2 we only run Mediaportal in our house - no ordinary TV. The only "downside" is how spoiled you get with this solution!

Great work! Thanks!

3. Really good news!!
As I said before, I do not see the need for any other feature in a MediaCenter that is not already (somehow) implemented in MediaPortal (somehow = that includes some plugins). And also, it works great and stable almost out of the box (some tweeking needed, but it is the right cost for flexibility). Really good news to hear that you guys are going to work and focus in a more stable and responsive MP, TVEngine (the only weak point I've seen, and only depending on ur htpc configuration)... and not mess with additional features. For me it was great to read it this morning.

Once again, thanks!!!!!

4. Present for dvb users
Do you mind if in this version can be added a workaround to get technotrend and other DVB card with bad drivers works after stanby ?
Can be a big present for the community :)

5. Great News
Thats really great news. I find the 0.2.3 RC build im running close to perfect already - so any stability improvements to MP are a bonus!

Nie to know we will have a stable, feature packed MP 1.0 to use while MP 2 is in development.

7. Resume after hibernate
Great news! That's the right path!

I ask the same as mrmojo666, but for Hauppauge cards. I'm still living with an ugly workaround for my Nova-SE2.

8. ts-reader for tv2?
Does it mean, that tv2 is also working with the new ts-reader? This would be great because mpeg-recording is the only reason for me to use tv-server

9. Great!
To me this is in fact better news than the previous announcement: "MediaPortal II".

I have been trying to get MP with TVengine up a few months ago, and I had to give up on it, because it was not stable enough for daily use. (the showstopper problems was : it would not always tune channels correctly, tried both TT S2-3200 and FireDTV)

No offense, but : when I read the earlier announcement of MP II, (a complete rewrite) I feared that we would be again a long time away from something I could actually use.

Thanks for the continued effort on this software.

11. stable release
I must say I was quite happy and shocked by the announcement of mediaportal II. I was hoping for a stable less feature-rich release first. And here it is anyway...
Great news.

13. Two Things I Would *really* like to see
Which don't seem to get much love at the moment :)

- A decent Web interface for scheduling and managing recordings

- A engine for auto scheduling of recordings based on keyword etc.

It interesting - those are must have fatures for me but they do not matter at all to others.

14. FM radio
Will FM radio be fixed in this version? I use it quite often.

Otherwise 2.3.0 is working well. Keep up the good work.

15. Thanks you !! I was hoping for this!
Thank you guys, this is the right decision, i really was hoping that you would declare a stop in adding new features an concentrate on stability. I am sorry to say that MP1 still really has stabillity issues and improving this will be great!!!

16. User
So MediaPortal 1.0 will "just" be continued project on the 0.2.3.0 release, only focusing on bugfixes and MediaPortal II will be a whole rewrited program that will focus on expanding the features? What about the plugin side? Will all the plugins that are made today only work with MediaPortal 1.0 then?

17. still waiting
It would be nice to get rid of "no video / audio" for my hardware analogue TVcard, which worked with TVE2. And to make TVE3 work with MSSQL again

18. Top notch
Very nice to hear. I've tried TV server, but found it lacking in stability. It crashed on my all the time. I also never got the EPG working. I really hope they implant the Television part of Mediaportal into TV server, because Mediaportal already is very good. It's very stable and user friendly. Getting the EPG working in MP was hardly 2 hours work. In TV server I wasted 4 days and still didn't succeed.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

19. Hope springs eternal
It's been a long awaited anouncement (1.5 years?). I feared MP had gone up it's own proverbial like a lot of open source stuff and was becoming a hobbyist project for the devs and the few who enjoyed tinkering. I've used it as the houses only TV source for over a year but have grown to see it as an enemy as the bugs that you might excuse in a regular app are just intolerable when you're trying to relax and simply watch TV. Like console games there is a much higher intolerance of bugs in this kind of app. Its a shame as it's almost really really good. Without rock solidity it just gets wasted.
