TvEngine v3.0 status
on 29-08-2006

It's been a while since we mentioned the upcoming TV Engine v3.0. Since the first announcement a lot of progress has been made. So what happened since then?

Here's the current feature list:

  • supports dvb-c/s/t , atsc , SkyStar 2 and analog hardware cards
  • supports CI/CAM interface for firedtv/floppdtv and twinhan
  • epg grabber / mhw grabber
  • com skip/clean support
  • radio timeshifting & recording
  • multiple frontend support
  • multiple backend support (1 master server and multiple slave servers)
  • rtsp streaming

Things took a bit longer than expected. We had to rewrite some directshow filters from scratch to fix lipsync issues and implemented fast seeking. Currently those new filters and the new tv server are being tested and we hope to release the first preview soon.

To give you an idea of the new server, here are some screenshots of the management console:

Great News!

Waiting for Download Possibilities (SVN?).

But please check the screenshots, they break the homepage layout (IE 6).

Great to see that things are progressing. The new TV engine seems very promising and I know I am not the only one that anticipate the first svn or test version to download.

One question though. What kind of hardware will be recommended?

Great news Frodo.. I'm checking this site everyday to grab some news on the tv engine v3

What happened with the technotrend dvb-s budget support with CI. I don't see it mentioned anymore.

What dvb-s card will be the best supported one (by means of CI and Diseqc)

Mails from Frodo always take great news, and this time is not different. I can't wait to test the new engine, the potential is enormous. Guys, you are great, keep up making MP the #1 HTPC choice.

This is great news, I suspect this ne TV engine & v0.3 will be a milestone in MP's take up. The feature listed here are a quantum leap in the direction that users have been requesting for a long time, I can't wait to try out the streaming capabilities.

@Arn01805:

Currently the only DVB-S card with CI and support for DiSEqC is the FireDTV-S (or FloppyDTV version). I tested both features with the new tvengine and can confirm both to work.

Michel

Sounds very cool indeed. I am just new to MP and have bought a new Core 2 Duo HTPC to use with it. have had quite a bit of problem but I just saw a notice that the MantisBDA are not yet supporterd in MP. Will TvEngine 3.0 support the Twinhan MantisBDA scramble sequence?

/Patrik (I am also a C# developer and have started looking into the code to see what I might be able to help with.).

I can't wait - have been specing up a new backend server box for last couple of weeks in anticipation - will have to place the order today.

This is going to ROCK!

Looks fantastic and looking forward to testing it. Is there any improvement in the zap times? For me, the new engine will probably be the time to start with DvbC!

Fantastic, well done guys. The current media portal is the best program I have used! Much better than commercial equivalents

Will dvr-ms still be used in the new TV engine? I have not been impressed with dvr-ms, most other video editing and compressing software I have used reads MPEG2 only.

I realise that it is easy to convert it, but it just seems a pointless extra step.

@Petermcc -> The new engine is going to record using TS rather than DVRMS or MPG. The advantage of this is that you can record all streams of a channel if desired. IE, all the BBC channels on the same transponder. This means that you can record a number of programs at the same time, even if you only have the one tv card. It also means that you can record scrambled channels even if you don't have a subscription (but you *will* need a subscription if you want to watch the recording). Lot's of programs like comclean and comskip use TS as their input and it seems to be much easier to work in this format.
Of course this is only for Digital TV, I'm not sure about analog yet.

In any even, I am yet another eager MP user who is dying to get his hands on this.

Wow, this sounds great. Streaming, fixed lipsync issues, multiple front- and backend support and much more. Does anybody know a date for a first SVN release? I'd even like to become alpha/beta tester

I think there is some false information in MarcusB's comment. To my knowledge new tv engine won't be able to record multiple channels from the same mux with one DVB tuner.

You can record multiple audio streams + subtitles + teletext together with main video.

So recording all channels on the same transponder is not going to be available?

Thats sad to hear, as its a feature that is actually not that rare in setop boxes with HD and its very useful.

I hope that at least the code is being structured so it wont be too hard to add later...

Is it with the new TvEngine possible to grab EPG without any other plugins?

Right, I do not use digital, I am running analog only.

So what format will analog be using in the new TV engine? As I said in my last comment I am not impressed with dvr-ms.

Hopefully MPEG2 will be used.

Otherwise though, feature list looks great!! Frontend and backend support! Fantastic.

MP is a fantastic program as it is. Imagine it later!

Sounds exactly the right way to go! Any chance of a backend that runs in Linux? ;)

When will the new TV Engine be ready for download? I'm hoping my TV card will be able to work with it, as it doesn't work under the current setup of MP :(

Good work btw, I wish I was as smart as you lot lol.

Any ideas when it will be ready for us to test. I already have my backend ready. 2 servers with dual tuners and a lot of memory. Front end still under contruction.
