VMR 7 Renderer removed
Written by DMAN, on 18-01-2006

The decision has been made to drop support for VMR 7 rendering and this has now been removed from MediaPortal as of today.

It has long been a requirement of MediaPortal to have a DirectX 9 hardware capable graphics card for the GUI interface etc. Since all DirectX 9 capable cards can use VMR9 the decision was a simple one. This allows for cleaner code and simpler support.

CVS users would have seen the new overlay feature while video is not fullscreen which VMR9 easily allows.

yayayayaya!
Of course thats only my opinion!
I'm thinking most people prefer the VM9 method at any rate!
The team is doing a fantastic job and everyone I've shown Mediaportal to now wants to know how to get they're system setup for it! Keep up the fantastic work folks!

Thats probably for the best, the OSD didnt work properly in VMR7 mode anyway.
However, VMR9 is not without its problem so i hope giving up on VMR7 means more focus will be put on making VMR9 work perfectly.

IMHO a good decision!

This will clean up the code and make the support easier. MP is a DX application and VMR9 is the best way to go.

Keep up the great work! :)

A really bad decision in my opinion!

MediaPortal should run on simple small hardware. You do not need a recent computer for playing media files or watching tv. I use a dx7 onboard graphics device within a barebone - sure lot of others do. Better drop supprt for dx9 and complete dx7 support.

To ffx
When you consider the cost of a low level DX9 capable card it just isn't an issue. You can get a 6200 for less than 50 dollars now.

I undersand that descision, it was the same for the now non-support of the software capture card...
better compatibility with DX9 card and no more complain about non working or bad working because of the DXmod ...
But I thing that not the better way for an ultimate mediacenter... I means most compatibility with more system , lot of people with an HTPC working now woudn't buy a new card .. they may change the mediacenter ...
Maybe the good option will be to disable the DX7 support but to put an option into the configuration.exe for enable the DX7 and a popup with a message like" If you using DX7 mod you'll lost numbers of function and lost quality, it's hardly recommand to get an fully DX9 graffic Card "

I can well understand that decision from a programmer's perspective, though as a user, I'm not that happy with it. It's probably to late to comment though ...

IMHO there is no reason to use a sophisticated DX9 gfx board in a media PC. In order to keep the PC silent, it's nice to be able to use passively cooled gfx chips (like Radeon 7000) or older chips that also don't use that much energy.

I use MP on an old Pentium III mostly for MP3s, I don't use video recording at all (and I'm not interested at the moment), the new RC2 ist just great for that, and I don't see any reason to use a better gfx board. Users are different.

Well, I'll stick with RC2 for the time being I guess. When I need a new version of MP I can still consider buying new hardware :)

Theres plenty of DX9 fanless graphics cards, the onboard ATI Xpress 200, ATI X300, ATI X550, ATI 1300, GF 6200, GF 6600 etc. Many of these probably use less power than old cards.

And there is plenty of reason to use a more sophisticated graphics card that supports hardware decoding and de-interlacing etc.

I think it's the right thing to do if wmr7 slows down development.
