Webinterface mistake
Written by Frodo, on 03-04-2007

We've made a big mistake with the webinterface for the tvserver.

As some of you might already have heard, it contains some parts of webguide4. To be clear, these parts are gfx only and NOT code. The reason this happened is because during development we borrowed the gfx layout of webguide4 with the intention to replace all the gfx with MP's own ones before releasing.

Sadly.. we forgot to replace some of the gfx and remove gfx we didnt use.

We would like to apologize to the author of WebGuide4 for this mistake.

All layout files like gfx/css styles/scripts etc have been removed from SVN for now until we found out which ones are left-overs from WebGuide4 and need to be replaced with our own graphics/styles.

3. It's not really an excuse
First, just let me make everyone aware that I am in support of MediaPortal as a project, and have played with it off and on since some of the first releases. But really, I think more of an apology is needed here. MP should not have used any part of Webguide full stop - even in testing. If you wanted to test, you should have mocked up a crappy looking basic page and used that, surely functionality was more important than looks. It's "mistakes" like this that give open source a bad name at times.
No, i don't think the person responsible should be kicked off the team, no i don't think the webinterface should be scrapped, but I do feel a "look, one of our team members F'd up, we do our best normally to protect other peoples copyright, very sorry we will make sure we do our best to prevent it happening again" is needed rather than "oh it was only in test that we stole your IP"

4. Who knows what happened behind the curta
Well jgriffin, that might be what the dev team has said when communicating with the WebGuide guy's. I think you're jumping to conclusions.

By the way, (I'm not much of an expert on these things): Does this mean that the SVN webinterface is basically completely unusable for now', or does this mean it doesnt look as nice as it will look once finished?

5. The best solution
Since THIS incident mediaportal is now a contaminated program.
In my opinion jgriffin will have to either join the developteam (to ease the workload) OR stop using the program.
There will still be a chance something like this happens again without his help.

6. It really is an excuse
Developers, even big ones, do this ALL the time. It isn't a big deal and it isn't IP theft, it is personal use. Often when developing there is a period of disconnect were the coder will need temp graphics to work with, and often they end up using ones they have on hand from other apps. They use real existing graphics because shitty temp graphics often make layout more difficult. Apple, Microsoft, Valve etc have all had similar things happen in beta and alpha releases. Normally something gets added hastily to a test release and it and a temp graphic sneaks in.
