Digital Everywhere provides internal and external devices for receiving DVB-C, DVB-T and DVB-S/S2.
All models include a CI interface so you can insert a CAM + smartcard (needed for many countries and for pay-tv).
FireDTV:
The FireDTV is an external unit connected via firewire. It comes with a remote control (also supported by MediaPortal) The power for the FireDTV comes from the firewire bus itself. If for some reason there is not enough power you can still use the external power adaptor.
The FireDTV is ideal for small htpc's which dont have enough room for a pci slot, for laptops or for people who dont have a free PCI slot.
The FireDTV has a Firewire loop-through on its backside so you can chain 2 or more firedtv devices
FloppyDTV:
The FloppyDTV is an internal unit also connected via firewire. This means a small cable outside the pc to the firewire jacket. Then again it means that you dont need a PCI slot
The power for the FloppyDTV comes from a power connector offcourse.
The FloppyDTV is normally installed where all your PCI cards are located too. However if you prefer, there is also a 3,5" Adapter available, so you can place the FloppyDTV in the 3,5" bay.
General:
Both the FloppyDTV and FireDTV are available in 3 different types
All versions are very stable and support a wide range of CAM's. In fact I didn't find a CAM yet which didn't work.
Both FireDTV/FloppyDTV contain sensitive tuners which are able to receive the DVB stream even if the reception signal isnt perfect.
Included in floppy and firedtv:
- The Hardware
- standard BDA drivers
- MCE drivers.
- FireDTV Viewer Software to watch and record TV channels. Vista 32 and 64 capable, H.264 capable (mpeg4, h.264 codecs not included)
- Remote Control (only included in firedtv)
Drivers:
Offcourse you want to use these devices in MediaPortal, but if you really want then there are also drivers for Windows Media Center.
You can download several drivers from the website at Digital Everywhere .
The MCE drivers are special versions and only needed if you are using the FireDTV/FloppyDTV with Windows Media Center.
For normal tv-applications like Mediaportal you will need to download/use the normal BDA drivers
Pro's:
- Supports H.264/MPEG-4 / HDTV
- very stable
- CI interface ( supported by MediaPortal / TvServer)
- Remote Control ( supported by MediaPortal )
- Internal and external versions
- available for DVB-C/S/S2/T
- fire-wire loop-through
- No PCI slot needed (FloppyDTV can be installed in a PCI slot if needed)
- works in MediaPortal, MCE2005, SageTv,... and linux
Con's:
- No dual tuner version available (yet)
- price
Overal Rating
I give these devices four stars out of five. The big plus of these devices is that they simply work. They are ideal for small htpc's which dont have enough room for a pci slot and offcourse the CI interface which is needed in many countries to watch DVB. Besides that the support is great and the drivers and firmware are continously updated.
The disadvantage is that this beauty cost more then the average DVB card and if you want a dual-tuner solution you'll need to buy 2 of them so the price adds up.
