Table of Contents

The installer should allow to manage custom paths for different components. Besides the installation path, the user should be able to modify the paths for plugins, logs, config and others. For each feature a different set of paths can be defined.

Definition of default paths

The default paths are defined in installer source (*.wix files).

Installation

  • The default values for every path is stored within the installation package.
  • The default values can be overwritten by commandline parameters.
  • When starting the installer, existing values in registry or paths.xml-files will be checked and read.
  • Within the installation graphical user interface the user is able to modifiy those paths.
  • During the installation process the paths are written to the paths.xml-files.

For the beginning only modifying the paths for new installation is important. For the later stage it needs to be specified what happens to existing files / folders when modfiying paths by

  • commandline usage: ignore / force move
  • installation gui: ignore / force move / ask user

Commandline parameter

MSI allows to set properties via commandline. This means the default paths are overwritten.
