Overview

General translation rules apply to languages and ensure standardized processes, usages and give general recommendations for translation. For language specific rules and recommendations see sub pages.

Details

  • Keep the common terms consistent across MediaPortal - use the voting system and Glossary to align with translators from your team.
  • Always try to keep the length of the translated string below or the same as the english resource. This prevents any usability issues and helps to keep good look & feel.
  • Think of the context in which the translation will be displayed in MediaPortal. What appears as an appropriate translation in Transifex, may not suit the situation it was intended for in MediaPortal. When you are not sure about the placement and usage of some string, consult developers.
  • When possible, apply the translation files directly to your MediaPortal test instance and observe the results before releasing it to community.
  • Be aware that some strings might later be concatenated in MediaPortal - try to form your translation such way that it makes sense even in your language. Examples:
    • Error messages ("Error {1} happened while {2}.")
    • Dialog messages ("Do you want to {1} with {2}?")
